about
Cam Huxford:
I have a long history of music idolatry. I found a good thing in my life: music. The problem is that I decided to treat it as a god and worship it. All kinds of gnarly things have resulted from that.
One thing that I have seen throughout my life is that God is faithful to crush our idols. He can do that because he is simply bigger and more powerful than all of the other things that we might choose to worship. The song “One God” was written out of the continual experience of seeing a big God rule over everything else.
God has done a lot of work on me but I am in no way beyond idolatry at this point in my life. As John Calvin said, our hearts are “idol factories.” I continue to build gods and thankfully, God continues to crush them. By “crush” I mean that God shows me clearly that those things have no power. It’s similar to what he showed the prophets of Baal in 1 Kings 18:20-40.
“…the fire of the Lord fell and consumed the burnt offering and the wood and the stones and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench”
It was clear that the god Baal could not compete with that kind of power. But I surprise myself in that even when I see how weak my idols are in comparison to the one true God, I will try to worship them. I sweep up the splinters, ashes, and dust and still find myself bowing down. This song is a call to “stop worshiping the splinters of broken gods.” There is only one God.
lyrics
Prophets proclaimed to our fathers long ago
To turn from your statues and your idols made of gold
Rise from your knees, stop worshiping
The splinters of broken gods, turn and see your King
There is one God over all kings and rulers
And He reigns alone
Now we proclaim the same God, the same Word
Who stood through the ages, Jesus Christ the Lord
Rise from your knees, stop worshiping
The splinters of broken gods, turn and see your King
There is one God over all kings and rulers
And he reigns alone
Burn them all down, my God, my God
There is one God over all kings and rulers
And he reigns alone
And the one God over all kings and rulers
Will not share his throne
